Not Your Grandpa's Bourbon Drink!
In the journey of life, grief often casts a shadow, but in between the pain and sorrow there are moments of light waiting to be discovered.
Today, I'm taking a break from the sad stuff to share something special with you—my favorite recipe for an Old Fashioned. And let me tell you, this isn't your grandpa's Bourbon drink!
This is my own concoction, born out of my momma's insistence when local bars just couldn't quite nail it for her. Maybe it was those chemo tastebuds playing tricks, or an excuse for me to make them at home, and she absolutely adored my version. Now, when I sip on this delightful Old Fashioned out on my back deck, I feel like my momma is right there with me. I've been asked to share this recipe at countless get-togethers with friends, and now I'm passing it on to you!
So, as we honor the memories of our loved ones who have passed, let's also celebrate the beautiful legacy they've left behind, like cherished recipes that will span generations. Join me on this journey as I learn to savor life's bittersweet moments, both in its struggles and in the comforting embrace of an Old Fashioned cocktail—a timeless recipe that my mom and I enjoyed together, even during the toughest times in her life. Cheers to making memories, keeping traditions alive, and making new ones!

Not Your Grandpa’s Old Fashioned Recipe:
- 2 ounces of Bourbon (Angel’s Envy or Woodford Reserve)
- 1-2 teaspoons simple syrup
- 1 orange peel
- 1 teaspoon of water
- 3-4 drops Angostura Bitters
- 1 large square ice cube (MOST important part)
- 1 Maraschino Cherry (Luxardo)
My Simple Syrup Recipe:
Mix equal parts water and granulated sugar and gently heat (stove or microwave) until sugar is fully dissolved.
Let cool for 2-3 minutes and add 1 tablespoon of dark brown sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract.
Here are some items I use for the perfect Old Fashioned:
Ice Cube Tray (no small or multiple cubes in this!)
Still Branch Old Fashioned Cocktail Mixer (if I'm in a hurry these are great!!)
Dried Orange Slices (I use these or fresh ones and I like both)
The rest you can find at your local liquor store!
It's all about the BOURBON:
My favorites are Angel's Envy or Woodford Reserve!
